Environmental Education Program
Juniata County Conservation District makes it a mission to educate people of all ages on environmental topics! JCCD hosts multiple educational events annually, both for adults and school students, on many different environmental issues. These issues range from watershed protection, pollution prevention, agriculture management practices, endangered species, and many others. Through environmental education efforts, JCCD looks to promote and instill conservation practices in the minds of all Juniata County residents, helping us protect Juniata County!
Annual Education Events
Mifflin/Juniata Envirothon
Juniata County Conservation District & Mifflin County Conservation District partner annually to host the Mifflin/Juniata Envirothon, a county Envirothon that is a part of the Pennsylvania Envirothon. The goal of Envirothon is to challenge high school students on their knowledge of environmental topics and natural resources in a competitive environment. 5-person teams of students rotate from station to station, with stations covering the following topics: soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and a current environmental issue. Teams use their knowledge & teamwork to answer challenging questions in the quest to be the highest scoring team. The winning team from Juniata County then competes at the Pennsylvania Envirothon event held annually, competing against the winning teams from every county in PA! The PA Envirothon includes both an oral component where students present on current environmental issues & the written competition with similar to that of the county Envirothon.

4th Grade Ag Day
Every fall, JCCD partners with Penn State Extension, Juniata County USDA offices, and Juniata County schools to give 4th graders an Ag careers field day. The Ag Day is held at a local Juniata County farm every fall and allows students to learn a multitude of careers and topics related to agriculture, including dairy, crops, farm equipment, soils, veterinarians, and many other topics. Student groups rotate between stations, learning about each topic from experts in their respective fields.
Snyder/Juniata Envirocamp
Every June, Juniata County and Snyder County Conservation Districts partner to host the Snyder/Juniata Envirocamp! Envirocamp is a three-night event that is free for Juniata & Snyder County students entering 1st – 4th grades. Students are grouped by the grade they are entering and rotate to multiple stations covering a variety of environmental and conservation topics. Stations strive to be hands-on, keeping the students engaged and helping them remember each topic. Students also get to work on different crafts, including t-shirts they get to take home at the end of Envirocamp!
Be on the lookout for updates about the event and registration on both JCCD’s Facebook page & SCCD’s Facebook page!
